In today's Greek culture wedding ceremonies consist of two parts, the service of betrothal and the sacrament of marriage. The service includes the exchanging of rings which have been blessed by the priest. Greek tradition states that the bride and groom are honored as queen and king for the day. During the sacrament of marriage the couple is given lighted candles that they hold throughout the service. The guests crowd around in a circle while the couple holds hands. This is followed by a religious reading and the consumption of wine. The couple is then walked around the alter three times to represent their journey together. After the walk around the alter the couple is declared married.
They then have a reception. The receptions are festive and have savory foods, plenty of wine, and singing and dancing.
Divorces were common in ancient Greece and in today's culture. Divorces were easy to get and there were many different reasons people got divorced. Some of the reasons were, when the women could not bear children, or the women committed adultery.
